SOUND DESIGN

SAMPLE LIBRARY

Use your Protools recording session and PD sounds to create a library of 80-100 different sounds. Be sure to label the sounds as descriptively as possible.

Goals-
Editing Regions/Samples
Using the Regions List
Exporting Samples from Regions List

Creating Regions/Samples

1- Open your sample recording. the with the Hand tool, hold option and double click your main sample file region on the track. Give it a descriptive name like Main Audio, whatever, etc.

2- Create a new track (stereo or mono, depending on your main sample file.) This will be your "edit track."

3- Select the area of the main region you want to extract as a sample with the Selector Tool. Be sure this selection is not clipping and that the sound has a strong level/amplitude.

4- Set the Hand Tool to the Scissors (click and hold the hand tool to select the scissor option in the tools above the tracks in the edit window.)

5- Using the Hand tool (with scissors), hold the option key and click and drag the selection to a new track. (Dragging a selection with the option key held makes a new copy of the selection in most applications- you can do this with the regular hand tool as well, but it will copy the whole region, not just a portion).

6- Your new region should now appear on the track you dragged it to.

7- Now trim and clean up the your new region (delete any unneeded silence, noise, clicks, pops, etc. Use Cmd+[ or ] to zoom in or out)

8- Select the region and go to- Audiosuite>Other>Normalize

Set Max. Peak to 100% and click Process (If your bring any noise into audible range, then use undo and lower the percentage. You should not hear any noise in your sample or else you need to rerecord it!). The point of normalizing is to get the loudest peak in the sound to the loudest point possible.

9- Listen to the region (remember to mute the original track) by hitting the space bar or in the regions list by holding the option key and clicking on the region.

10- If you are happy with the region's sound, then hold option and double click the region with the Hand tool. A panel opens to rename the region. Give the region a descriptive name for your final sound library.

Sample Library – Exporting Regions

1- Be sure to remove any unwanted regions from your "edit track" in the edit window and all your final regions are named. BE SURE TO KEEP YOUR MAIN TRACK IN THE EDIT WINDOW.

2- In the regions list, you can then select unused regions and delete them. Click on Audio at the top of the regions list- Audio>Select>Select Unused Regions Except Whole Files then Audio>Clear Selected and click remove to delete the unused regions from your session.

3- To export your samples- hold shift and click all of the regions in the regions list that you want to export or select ALL the regions on your "edit track".

4- With your regions selected in the region list menu click Audio>Export Selected as Files

5- In the pop-up panel, select AIFF, Stereo, 24bit, 48kHz. Select Tweak Head conversion quality.

6- For Destination Directory, hit Choose… Then navigate to a directory you want, click on the new folder button and name your folder myname_samp_lib1. Then click Choose… and then Export…

7- Check out your samples!

Make back-up copies and a copy to hand in.
